GOOD MORNING BOYS,
Today we will be going through the various definations and calculate the molecular masses of compound.

Learning objective :
students will be able to

  • Define atomic mass, Molecular Mass & formula mass
  • calculate molecular masses of compounds.

Atomic mass unit
It is defined as a mass exactly equal to one twelfth the mass of one carbon – 12 atom.

Gram atomic mass of a substance –
The atomic mass of a substance when expressed in grams is known as its gram atomic mass.
The atomic mass of Sulphur is 32u. Gram atomic mass of Sulphur is 32g.
 Molecular mass
It is the sum of atomic masses of the elements present in a molecule.
It is obtained by multiplying the atomic mass of each element by the number of its atoms and  adding them together.
Molecular mass expressed in grams is called gram molecular mass.

Q1. Find out the value of molecular weight of the given compounds:
(i) CH_{4}      (ii)H_{2}O      (iii)CO_{2}
Ans.
(i)CH_{4} :
Molecular weight of methane, CH_{4}
= (1 x Atomic weight of carbon) + (4 x Atomic weight of hydrogen)
= [1(12 u) +4 (1u)]
= 12 u + 4 u
= 16 u

(ii) H_{2}O :
Molecular weight of water, H_{2}O
= (2 x Atomic weight of hydrogen) + (1 x Atomic weight of oxygen)
= [2(1) + 1(16 u)]
= 2 u +16 u
= 18 u
(iii) CO_{2} :
= Molecular weight of carbon dioxide, CO_{2}
= (1 x Atomic weight of carbon) + (2 x Atomic weight of oxygen)
= [1(12 u) + 2(16 u)]
= 12 u +32 u
= 44 u
(iv)  HNO3
Atomic mass of H =1u
Atomic mass of N =14u
Atomic mass of O =16u
Molecular mass of HNO3 = 1 + 14 + (16 x 3) = 63u
Formula Mass:
Sum of atomic masses of all atoms in a formula unit of the compound. Applicable for Ionic Compounds.
For example: - Formula mass of sodium chloride (NaCl) = atomic mass of sodium (Na) + atomic mass of chlorine (Cl) = 23.0 u + 35.5 u = 58.5 u.Formula Unit Mass
Molar mass
The mass of one mole of a substance in grams is called its molar mass.
The molar mass in grams is numerically equal to atomic /molecular/formula mass in u.
Molar mass of oxygen (O) =16 g.
Molar mass of water (H2O) = 18 g.

Assignment Questions :
Calculate the molecular mass of following compound :
1. sulphuric acid
2. Glucose
3. Ammonia

i have a doubt, In all cases is the atomic mass and gram atomic mass same like in given case sulphur's atomic mass is 32u and gram atomic mass is 32g, so in cases of all elements or compounds will the atomic mass and gram atomic mass be same?

UNIT 1- SOME BASIC CONCEPTS OF CHEMISTRY

Day 3 17.4.20 Good morning Boys, Today we will start with our first unit ,some basic concepts of chemistry. Students are required to make one chemistry register where all the work related to the subject need to be noted. Register will be evaluated when the school reopens.  LEARNING OBJECTIVE : students will be able Recall the S.I Units of Measurements Define matter Differentiate solid ,liquid and gases     Matter Anything that has mass and occupies space is termed as matter.example:- notebook, pencil, air, water etc P h ysical Classification of Matter P r o p er t ies S o lid L iquid Gas 1. volume Definite Definite Indefinite 2. Shape Definite Indefinite Indefinite 3.  Inter  molecular force of attraction Very high Moderate Negligible  /  Very low 4.  arrangement  of molecules Orderly arranged Free      to      move within the volume Free to move every where 5.  Inter  molecular space Very small Slightly

NUMERICAL PRACTICE

DAY 5 27.4.20 Good Morning Boys, Today we will be practising the numericals related to the concept learnt in previous classes. Learning outcome : students will be able to Apply the formula interpret the question. Analyse the question. Molarity formula with  Density  is given as conversion table for reference : 1 cm 3 1mL 1000 mm 3 1 Litre 1000mL 1000 cm 3 1 m 3 10 6   cm 3 1000 L 1 dm 3 1000 cm 3 1 L NUMERICAL QUESTIONS : Question 1 Calculate the molarity of  N a O H N a O H  in the solution prepared by dissolving its 4 g in enough water to form 250 mL of the solution. Solution  Molarity M = Moles of solute(g)/ volume of solution (litres) = (4 g / 40 g ) ×  (1000/250) =0.1 mol/0.250 L = 0.4 mol/L = 0.4 M Question 2 20% (w/W) NaOH solution (density of solution= 1.2 g/cc). Calculate the Molarity? Solution 20% (w/M) means 20 gm  in 100gm  of solution Now Density of solution =1.2g/cc Density = mass /volume So Volume of Solution =100/1.2 cc Now M =

Chemistry Practical 11 D

Day 4 18.4.20 Good Morning students:  Today is our first chemistry practical period through blogs. please read the general instruction carefully. General Instructions :  1. students must get the concern slip signed by the parents for working in the laboratory. The concern slip contains the guidelines for working in the laboratary. Written guidelines for working in chemistry lab would be given once the school reopen. kindly note signature of  parent on concern slip is mandatory for working in chemistry lab. 2. Labcoat is mandatory for working in the lab. 3. carry your practical file and stationary during the practical period. 4. Follow the Instruction given by teacher at all times. 5. Casual attitude while working in lab will not be entertained. 6. Class would be divided into 2 batches: Batch 1 Physics Batch 2 chemistry (depending on the strength of class ) At present both the batches would be writing the practical in your chemistry file.
